In three weeks only, about eighteen thousand British nationals living in Portugal have already applied for the exchange of the current residence permit for a new one certifying their resident status under the Withdrawal Agreement, at the new Brexit Portal (Brexit.sef.pt), released last 14 December by the Immigration and Borders Service (SEF), in cooperation with the United Kingdom Embassy in Lisboa.
The new card will be issued soon, and confirms their resident status under the Withdrawal Agreement between the European Union and the United Kingdom, ensuring the protection of their rights with the end of the transitional period last December 31st. Until the issue of the card, and after submission of the registration form in the new Portal, the United Kingdom nationals may download the supporting document of the application in digital form, a supporting document with a QR Code, which can be used every time they travel as a supporting evidence of their residence in Portugal.
As from this month, SEF will start notifying British nationals to schedule a visit to a service bureau in one of the twenty City Halls selected in all the national territory for that purpose, for the collecting of the biometric data to be stated in the new residence permit.
It should be recalled that current residence documents of the European Union will continue to be accepted until the issue of the new residence permit.
According to data of the Borders, Asylum and Immigration Report 2019, about 34.358 nationals from the United Kingdom were living in Portugal.
