The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service [SEF] has terminated the Operation “Operação Verão Seguro Algarve – 2014”.

On 1 July, initiated the operation “Verão Seguro Algarve - 2014” – which ran until 15 September – aimed at intensifying and reinforcing border control at Faro Airport, at the maritime borders and at the Police and Customs Cooperation Centre [CCPA] of Castro Marim.

In addition to enhancing border control during this period, SEF developed 58 surveillance operations, including approximately 130 checks, targeting bathing areas and other places of large concentrations of foreign nationals.

Six of the fifty eight operations were conducted jointly with the civil police [Polícia de Segurança Pública (PSP)], the Maritime Police, the Authority for Working Conditions (ACT) and the Social Security.

The joint actions with ACT and the Social Security were intended at fighting undeclared labour, illegal employment and labour exploitation in the Algarve, since this phenomenon with negative repercussions at fiscal level is highly potentiated by the seasonal nature of labour relations in the tourism sector.

The joint actions with the Maritime Police were aimed at checking recreational craft docked in the coastal areas between Faro and Olhão, at the Ria Formosa and Portimão, at Rio Arade, as well as strengthening the control at the maritime borders of the Algarve.

The joint actions with PSP were intended, first and foremost, at fighting sexual exploitation of undocumented foreign women and international human traffic, and therefore included checks on night clubs suspected of such practices.

700 non-national citizens were checked, 48 of which were irregular migrants, 9 were detained for illegal stay and shall be object of removal proceedings, 1 was detained on grounds of holding a forged document, 25 were notified for voluntary departure and the remaining, on the assumption that they may fulfill the conditions to regularize their status in National Territory, were directed to SEF’s administrative services. SEF also detected one foreigner for whom an extradition warrant had been issued and two others who were wanted by police or by judicial authorities.

18 administrative offenses were filed against employers of illegal workers, and various administrative offenses to non-national self-employed entrepreneurs for lacking the necessary licenses and for unauthorized trade. The value of the fines for illegal employment or trade varied from 23.000 and 180.000 Euros.
