Yesterday, the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service (SEF – Serviço de Estrangeiros e Fronteiras) carried out an inspection activity to the 'Annual Aveiro Fair' (Feira Anual de Aveiro) known as “March Fair”. This action aimed at controlling the legal stay of foreign citizens in Portugal as well as the inspection to the professional activities of those citizens and respective legal authorization to perform such activities.

The inspection carried out inside the Fair’s facilities identified about a dozen foreign citizens and resulted in the detention of four illegal immigrants, i.e., foreign citizens that did not hold a valid residence permit or visa allowing them to stay in national territory.

Three of the illegal immigrants received a notification for leaving the country within 20 days under penalty of forced removal. The fourth illegal immigrant is a wanted person on the scope of a proceeding under investigation of crimes of facilitation of illegal immigration and falsification of documents; thus the compulsory procedures for police and judicial support were instigated. Albeit the citizen is not a legal resident, he still remains in national territory while waiting for the investigation’ completion.

The employer entities were punished with three fines amounting to 30.000EUR on grounds of hiring illegal labour. A foreign employer without legal residence in Portugal was also fined (arising to 1.200EUR) on grounds of performing a self-employed activity.

SEF’s action had the participation of the 'Police/Customs Cooperation Centre' (Centro de Cooperação Policial e Aduaneira) for purposes of exchanging of police information.
