The National Director of the Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service [SEF], Manuel Jarmela Palos, has been decorated with the Grand Award in Silver for services rendered to the Republic of Austria, as a tribute to the work developed in FRONTEX – The European Agency for the Management of External Borders of the European Union.
The decoration, awarded by the President of the Republic of Austria, was presented last night, at a ceremony in the Embassy of Austria in Wien.
Manuel Jarmela Palos is the Vice-President of the Management Board of FRONTEX, the decision-making organ of the Agency, composed by the Directors of the Immigration Services of the 30 States forming the European Union, the Schengen area and Switzerland.
Having been elected in 2008 for a two year period and re-elected once, his assignment will terminated this February, since he may not, under the statutes of the Agency, run as a candidate again.
FRONTEX, which was set up by Regulation (EC) 2007/2004 of the Council, reinforces borders security and guarantees the operational coordination of joint actions carried out by the Member States for the implementation of EU measures on the management of the external borders.
Various actions and joint operations have been conducted by the Agency, aiming at coordinating the activities of Member States within the scope of the integrated management of the Union’s external border and for a mutually supported development of the combat against illegal immigration by sea.
The Portuguese Immigration and Borders Service, due to its paramount role in border control issues and in the fight against illegal immigration, is the national contact point for FRONTEX and plays a vital role in those actions and operations.
