By means of administrative rule published on 9 April 2007 on Diário da República, the Ministry of Internal Affairs established a schedule in accordance to which the Aliens and Borders Service (SEF) will secure the control service at the 22 national sea borders, which represent border crossing points, in accordance to the Schengen Borders Code.

The operation of transferring onto SEF the last twelve border points controlled by the GNR (National Guard) is Scheduled as follows: 12 April - Peniche and Cascais, 13 - Setúbal and Sesimbra, 16 - Aveiro and Nazaré, 17 - Olhão, Faro and Portimão, 20 - Leixões and Póvoa do Varzim, and 23 - Sines.

From the dates stated, the Aliens and Borders Service will also undertake the task of controlling the entry and exit of Portuguese citizens in and out of national territory through those sea border posts.
