The Aliens and Borders Service enacts today, on the departure lounge of Faro Airport, 5 RAPID gates – Automatic Identification of Passengers Holding Travelling Documents, which allows an automatic control of passengers in possession of electronic passport, thus eliminating the need of human intervention.
Following the launching of the proof of concept by the Deputy Secretary of State of the Internal Affairs, Dr. José Magalhães, on the 26th of April, this system was enacted at the arrival lounge of Faro Airport on the 23rd of May. Project RAPID is being assessed by a team of experts and researchers of the Algarve University.
This innovating system will permit a highly rationalized management and a significant boost to the efficiency of means at border control. By reducing the process of border crossing to an average of less than 20 seconds, it will speed up the flow of passengers significantly.
